A Century of Golfing Legacy

100 Days of Querbes

In the heart of Shreveport, nestled among towering pines and rolling fairways, Querbes Golf Course stands as a testament to the city’s rich golfing heritage. Established in 1924, Querbes has been a hub for both casual and competitive golfers for a century, shaping the sport’s local landscape and welcoming players from all walks of life.

The course officially opened for play in July 1925, marking the beginning of what would become a cherished community landmark. Over the decades, Querbes has played host to countless tournaments, friendly rounds, and aspiring golfers eager to test their skills on its well-manicured greens. Unlike many courses of its time, Querbes was notable for allowing women to play from its early days, fostering inclusivity and encouraging more players to take up the game.

Throughout its storied history, Querbes Golf Course has welcomed numerous golfing legends. The great Sam Snead, also known as Slammin’ Sam, also played at Querbes on April 30, 1946. Other notable golfing legends playing at our course include Jackie Burke, Tommy Bolt, Mike Suchak and most recently Philip Barbaree (USGA Junior Amateur Champion & Byrd Alum,) Sam Burns, (multiple PGA Tour winner and Calvary Alum) and local legend Hal Sutton, a Shreveport native who went on to become a 14-time PGA Tour winner, including his memorable victory over Tiger Woods at the 2000 Players Championship. Sutton’s connection to Querbes serves as a point of pride for the local golf community, proving that world-class talent can emerge from its fairways. Barbara Faye White’s undefeated Curtis Cup record is another incredible testament to the legacy of excellence at Querbes. White is the daughter of long-time professional Ned White.  Beyond individual achievements, Querbes Golf Course has played a pivotal role in shaping golf in Shreveport. It has been home to numerous junior golf programs, high school tournaments, and amateur championships, fostering generations of local talent. The course’s influence extends beyond sports, serving as a social and recreational hub for the community.

Over the years, Querbes has seen many transformations, with improvement projects funded through bond elections and community-driven initiatives. The course has undergone multiple renovations, including updated greens, enhanced drainage systems, and modernized facilities to keep pace with the evolving standards of the game. These investments have ensured that Querbes remains not just a historic venue, but a thriving, well-maintained course that continues to attract golfers of all skill levels.

As Querbes Golf Course celebrates its 100th anniversary, it stands as more than just a collection of fairways and greens—it is a cornerstone of Shreveport’s golfing community, a place where history and tradition meet the promise of the future. From its first round in 1925 to the champions who have walked its fairways, Querbes continues to shape the game and the city it calls home.

Here’s to a century of golf, and the many rounds still to come.
